About James Pendergrast Memorial Library
James Pendergrast Memorial Library Albany State University

The James Pendergrast Memorial Library is the nerve center of Albany State University. The library is named in honor of Dr. James Pendergrast who was Dean of Academic Affairs. The library’s collection is approximately 200,000 volumes. It includes electronic and print journals, government documents, microform and other resources. The library is a part of the GALILEO consortia. GIL (GALILEO Interconnected Libraries) is the integrated library management system for acquiring, cataloging, accessing and circulating the collections of Albany State and members of the USG (University System of Georgia). GIL is an extension of GALILEO, Georgia’s Virtual Library, which provides access to thousands of full-text journals, electronic books and much more. Albany State’s online public access catalog is located at gil.asurams.edu

Library patrons use GIL Express to borrow materials across the USG.  GIL and GIL Express form the gateway to all information resources in the libraries of the USG Institutions, the Atlanta History Center, and the Georgia Department of Archives and History. Students, faculty and staff have access to all eligible circulating resources at all the USG libraries through onsite and remote requesting services.

Hands-on-training for all of the GALILEO databases is available for individuals, groups, tours and classes. Students gain a wealth of knowledge on the resources that are available to them at the Pendergrast Library through bibliographic instruction.

Albany State University in partnership with Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Georgia, Georgia State University, Georgia Regents University, Georgia Southern University, Valdosta State University, University of North Georgia, and the College of Coastal Georgia have established a statewide institutional repository (IR) called the GALILEO Knowledge Repository funded by an IMLS Grant. This project, “GALILEO Knowledge Repository: Advancing the Access and Management of Scholarly Digital Content’, has advanced scholarly communication by expanding the use of IRs by U.S. colleges and universities and by increasing the number of professionals with knowledge and skills in managing consortia IRs.

Faculty and Staff may donate electronic documents to the Ram Scholar which serves as an institutional repository for Albany State University. The Ram Scholar will preserve and document the scholarly communication of Albany State University. Items that may be selected for the repository include scholarly journal articles for which the donor has copyright, presentations given at professional conferences, power point presentations, papers from the graduate symposium and public information, yearbooks, research related to the university, and other archival information. The website is ramscholar.openrepository.com/ramscholar/.
